Following the overwhelming success of public voting in the 2015 Melbourne Market Awards, the expert panel of judges have spoken – naming Melbourne’s ‘BEST’ Market Traders from the Markets of Melbourne (Prahran Market, South Melbourne Market, Queen Victoria Market and Dandenong Market) across 14 categories.

Judges Russell Zimmerman (Executive Director of the Australian Retailers Association), Nicky Riemer (Executive Chef and Co-Owner of Union Dining) and Hilary McNevin (Freelance Food and Wine Writer) assessed each of the 53 ‘Favourites’ secret-shopper-style, scoring them on a range of criteria including service, quality of advice, stall presentation and standard of produce/wares.

The results have been tallied and Melbourne’s Best Market Traders were announced at the exclusive Award Ceremony last week at The Apartment in Melbourne’s CBD, hosted by ex-MasterChef contestant and blogger (The Wholehearted Cook), Dani Venn.

ULTIMATE BEST Gary’s Quality Meats Prahran Market

The big winner of the night was Gary McBean from Gary’s Quality Meats with the Prahran Market trader taking out a trifecta: Best Meat Trader, Best Veteran Trader and Ultimate Best Trader.

The Veteran Trader Award recognises those who have committed more than 20 years of service and hard work to their Market, whilst the Ultimate Best Trader Award rewards the trader with the highest overall combined score from the three judges.

Gary is a fourth-generation butcher and has been a part of the Prahran Market family since 1975. He has been consistently recognised for his efforts, with his three awards this year following two consecutive Best Meat Trader Awards in 2013 and 2014 – ultimately cementing his place at the top in 2015.

Other stand-outs this year include Georgie’s Harvest (South Melbourne Market), Padre Coffee (South Melbourne Market) and The Chicken Pantry (Queen Victoria Market) who have each been named the Best in their respective categories for the third consecutive year as well.

Celebrating the best of Melbourne’s most historic Markets, this was the third annual Melbourne Market Awards program, as presented by the Markets of Melbourne.
