On Tuesday 4th September the markets will host an industry forum to facilitate a discussion between key industry figures and foodies on local food issues.
Following the success and popularity of the Great Banana Giveaway in 2011, the Markets of Melbourne will be hosting a Free for All event on Friday 7th September where, at each of the three markets, one item of particularly sought after produce will be given away en masse. Stay tuned to find out what this year’s selection will be.
The Trader Cook Off is predicted to be a crowd pleaser again this year, when market traders will compete against each other to find Melbourne’s best trader cook for 2012 and aim to tip reigning champion, Queen Victoria Market’s Maria Yiannatzis of The Seafood & Oyster Spot, of her perch! Cook offs will run at each market throughout the week, with the final to be held on Saturday 8th September, on the main stage at Federation Square.
To conclude the week, on Sunday 9th September one of Melbourne’s most revered fine dining establishments, Taxi Dining Room, will host a special lunch in celebration of the Markets of Melbourne. Executive Chef Tony Twitchett’s menu will pay homage to the marvelous seasonal produce and superstar traders which make our markets the essential Melbournisms they are.
Each market will be a hub of pure celebration on that final day when they each Celebrate the Senses with live music, street festivals, parties and more to wrap up Market Week 2012.
