You heard correctly! Melbourne’s three largest and longest running markets have joined forces to raise the profile of market shopping across the board… and who better to help them do this than littleBig?
Introducing Markets of Melbourne
Three of Melbourne’s cultural icons, Prahran Market, Queen Victoria Market and South Melbourne Market, have joined forces to form Markets of Melbourne – an organisation aimed at raising the profile of market shopping in this wonderful city of ours.
The main objective of Markets of Melbourne is to educate consumers about the benefits of market shopping. This will enable them to make informed decisions about the freshness and quality of the food they consume and the environmental, social and economic impact of their shopping choices. Our locally run markets compete with huge corporate supermarket chains and Markets of Melbourne want these great market institutions to survive long into the future and to continue as important sources of trade for hundreds of small businesses.
Markets of Melbourne is spearheaded by Julie Busch – Prahran Market General Manager, Jennifer Hibbs – Queen Victoria Market Chief Executive Officer and Claude Baxter – South Melbourne Market Manager.
On behalf of the group Julie Busch, says, “We’re so excited to be working together to bring all that is wonderful about our magnificent markets to the forefront. Melbournians really are so lucky to have the best market culture in the world and we look forward to welcoming new shoppers to the experience. Where else can you find extraordinary value and freshness, a century and a half of local experience and knowledge and make a significant impact to your local economy, simply by doing the weekly shop?”
Melbourne has a rich market culture, with all three markets being founded in the late 19th century. Today these metro markets remain thriving places of commerce, entertainment and community gathering, providing the freshest and best quality produce available just as they did back in the 1800’s. Many stall holders continue on the family tradition of market life, some with decedents dating back to the first days of the markets, all with colourful and fascinating stories to tell.
Markets of Melbourne provide an unsurpassed opportunity to tap into the issues surrounding fresh produce supply and purchase in Melbourne and we welcome media enquiries on any related issue.
We look forward to communicating with you about key issues, happenings and consumer benefits related to Markets of Melbourne.
See you at the market!
